It is technically part of the county of Merseyside, but St Helens is a proud and independent town. Some Liverpudlians call people from St Helens 'woollybacks', implying rural naivety, but in fact St Helens is an industrial town, based on manufacturing - including the world-famous Pilkington glassworks - and coal. The northern St Helens seat is slightly more affluent and less working class than St Helens South. Apart from two Tory wards, and Lib Dem support around the town of Newton-le-Willows, the constituency is solidly Labour. John Evans, who has represented Labour here for 20 years, should be able to hang on as MP until he retires.
