Birmingham's Northfield constituency changed hands four times between 1979 and 1992, illustrating the highly marginal nature of this seat. Basically working-class, but with many skilled and relatively well-paid workers and including Rover's Longbridge factory, Northfield is one of those seats that will illustrate the success or failure of Labour's modernisation project. Boundary changes will have helped Labour slightly and current projections should see Labour safely home in 1997.
