In 1987 the Tories reacted by selecting a younger, more dynamic candidate, Rupert Allason, but he too has had his problems and Torbay now looks like one of the Lib Dems' better chances of a gain at the next general election. Their candidate will again be Adrian Sanders, who many people think was cheated out of a victory in the Devon Euro-election of 1994 by the intervention of a 'Literal Democrat'.
